=LOPEZ JAENA DAY=
Graciano López Jaena, one of the founders of La Solidaridad, was born on December 18, 1856, in Jaro, Iloilo. His mother believed that becoming a priest was the right path for Jaena. Studying in the seminary, he observed the pretentious and lavish lifestyles of the corrupt Spanish friars. In 1874, Jaena wrote the satirical novel Fray Botod, which criticized the cruelty and abusive behavior of the Spanish friars. The Spanish government was furious about his novel, which led Jaena to leave the Philippines and study medicine in Spain. He died in Spain from tuberculosis at the age of 39.
